Medical/Surgical Consultation
Our patients profit from our extensive medical and surgical network initiated with the goal of providing the best level of care for our patients. While we manage many medical conditions of the eye in our office, sometimes surgical intervention is needed. We partner with the most highly trained surgeons in Asheville to secure the best results for our patients.
Cataract Surgery
Cataracts are typically a disease of aging and occur when the normally crystal clear lens in the eye becomes yellow, clouded or both. This results in a decrease in vision that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Cataracts are usually caused by the natural aging of the eye but can be attributed to certain medications and trauma. Thankfully, because of improvements in sugical technology, cataract surgery renders excellent visual advancement with relatively few risks for the patient.
Other surgical/medical referrals
Diseases that affect the retina, including diabetes, high blood pressure and macular degeneration, can be managed with a variety of traditional medical, surgical and laser techniques. These techniques are designed to limit the loss of vision and sometimes improve a patient's vision otherwise compromised due to retinal diseases.
Patients with diseases that affect the cornea of the eye will often require surgery if medical therapy fails. Glaucoma is another common eye illness which may need laser and/or surgical intervention to help prevent loss of vision.
Whatsoever the cause for the surgical referral, rest assured that Dr. Jacobs has access to a network of Ashville's best surgeons and ophthalmologists.
